Today we are actively studying distant planets and even intend to settle on them. And all this despite the fact that we have not yet fully studied our native Earth. Archaeologists from all over the world are digging up the ruins of ancient cities – for example, the oldest settlement in the world called Chatal-Huyuk has been studied for more than 50 years. Sometimes the presence of ancient cities completely changes our understanding of modern countries. For example, recently scientists have taken a fresh look at the history of Israel because on its territory were found the ruins of a huge city. It turned out that large Israeli cities had arisen long ago, and their inhabitants could build huge buildings.
For the first time about an ancient Israeli city called En Esur became known in the 1960s. At that time, archaeologists were not particularly interested in the place, but a couple of years ago on the territory of the ancient landmark began construction of the highway. It was then that archaeologists began to find the ruins of ancient structures and have now excavated more than 40,000 square meters of the settlement. Researchers believe they have found only 10% of the area of the once-existing city, so all the interesting things are yet to come. The oldest city in Israel
According to scientists, the first people appeared in this place about 7000 years ago. Already at that time, the first public buildings were built on the study area, that is, the settlement has already acquired urban outlines. Then, for unknown reasons, after a while, the population of En Esura suddenly began to grow. In the end, the area of the city was approximately 650,000 square meters, which allowed to accommodate about 6,000 people.
According to the head of the excavation, Yitzhak Patz, the city consisted of a network of streets and squares. The roads were paved with stone and the walls of the structures were plastered. Around the huge settlement was erected a two-meter wall with towers in which sat the military and protected the city from enemies.
Ancient structures of Israel
And the opponents, by the way, could notice the city from afar, because it was built a giant building at that time 25 meters high. According to scientists, this structure had a religious purpose – inside were found human figures and bones of animals. Most likely, priests from time to time made sacrifices to God in the form of all sorts of living things. In those days, it was, in principle, commonplace.

Archaeologists also found many warehouses, which stored cereals and other food. On this basis, they assumed that many residents of the city of En Esur were engaged in farming. It also follows that the huge city was the center of various crafts and trade. And this, as the researchers emphasized, is one of the main distinguishing features of the city from the rural settlement.
Archaeologists were also surprised that many buildings are built of stone blocks weighing up to 15 tons. Given that there are no rocks near the city, archaeologists have suggested that the builders had to carry heavy building materials for a distance of several kilometers.
Finally, on the topic of archaeology, I recommend reading about the box found in Pompeii with witchy objects. These include mirrors, amulets, and human figures – what do you think they were intended for?
