More than 400 illegal migrants rescued off the coast of Libya

More than 400 illegal immigrants were rescued off the Libyan coast. This was reported by Xinhua, citing the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on Friday, February 5. It is indicated that people were picked up by two Libyan coast guard vessels and taken to the country’s capital, Tripoli.

“The UN and the International Rescue Committee provided them with vital assistance,” the report said.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 323 migrants died and 417 went missing along the Central Mediterranean route in 2020, while 11,891 illegal immigrants were rescued and returned to Libya.

Recall that in 20 years the number of migrants in the world has increased by almost 110 million to 281mn people. The top five countries with the highest number of migrants are the United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
