A landslide in a jade mine in northern Myanmar claimed the lives of at least 50 people, Reuters reports citing local authorities.
“Found 50 bodies of the dead. We continue the rescue operation, ”the agency quotes a statement by local emergency services. It is reported that the landslide came down early in the morning, an unknown number of miners are under the rubble.
A landslide in the jade-rich area of Kachin was caused by precipitation. It is known that there are frequent accidents, including fatal ones. Jade mining, as well as the search for missing stones in the sludge – waste from mining – are carried out by unskilled workers, they are poorly monitored for compliance with safety standards.
According to Reuters, a significant part of the jade production in Myanmar is conducted purposefully for the supply of this mineral to China. A fatal incident similar to today was reported in December 2015: then an unexpected landslide also led to the deaths of 50 workers.
