Afghan ambassador assesses prospects for withdrawal of U.S. and NATO contingents

Kabul expects a responsible approach from NATO and the U.S. in the withdrawal of troops, this implies the prevention of chaos and financial support for the country, said in an interview the Ambassador of Afghanistan to Russia Said Tayeb Javad.
He explained that now “the military operations in Afghanistan are almost 100 percent conducted by the Afghan armed forces,” that is, the presence of foreign troops “is no longer decisive … because international forces are no longer fighting.”

“The role of international NATO forces and U.S. troops in the fight against the Taliban and terrorists has significantly diminished … So I don’t think the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan is essential to the war effort,” the ambassador said.
“However, we do expect NATO and the U.S. to be responsible in the context of their withdrawal, which means avoiding chaos as well as financial support for both Afghanistan’s security services and its economy… What we expect from the U.S. and NATO is a responsible approach, making decisions based on the real situation on the ground, not political considerations, profit,” the high-ranking diplomat stressed.
