American scientists conducted a clinical trial of a drug that eliminates the effects of aging. The results of the study, published in the journal Clinical and Translational Medicine, show that the drug prevents aging defects, restores muscle strength, and enhances cognitive function.
Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston have tested a drug called GlyNAC, which is a combination of the commonly used medicinal glycine and acetylcysteine. Both of these substances are chemically converted into an effective natural antioxidant, glutathione.
Earlier, scientists, after 20 years of studying the mechanisms of aging in mice and humans, concluded that the most important component of the suspension of these processes in the body is the preservation and maintenance of a good state of mitochondria (cellular organelles responsible for energy production). They provide energy for cellular functions by burning fat and sugar from foods.
By generating energy, mitochondria produce waste products – free radicals. Without antioxidants, radicals can damage cells, membranes, lipids, proteins, and DNA. Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant and is responsible for neutralizing toxic radicals. In earlier studies, researchers found that the level of glutathione in older people is much lower than in younger people, and the level of oxidation and mitochondrial defects, respectively, is much higher.
Previous animal studies have shown a positive effect of GlyNAC. It became known that it not only eliminates the deficiency of glutathione, reduces the oxidative process, but also completely restores the function of mitochondria in old mice.
In a new experiment, elderly volunteers aged 70 to 80 received GlyNAC for 24 weeks. Then the scientists compared the various performances of the subjects with those of the control group, consisting of young people aged 21 to 30 years.
“We measured glutathione in red blood cells, mitochondrial oxidation, plasma biomarkers of oxidative stress, damage and inflammation, endothelial function, glucose and insulin levels, gait dynamics, muscle strength, body composition, performance, cognitive tests, and production rates. glucose and muscle protein breakdown, ”lead author Dr. Rajagopal Sehar said in the press release.
Thus, after the completion of the GlyNAC course, the listed parameters in the elderly improved significantly, and in some, they even approached the indicators of the control group.
However, it was found that 12 weeks after stopping the intake, the effect begins to weaken, the indicators return to the initial level.
At the same time, the study authors hope that this drug will become a safe and effective way to support healthy aging.
