The head of the German Green Party, Annalena Berbock, has called for the closure of a recently established environmental foundation in Germany, which may take part in the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted her as saying.
Babcock said that the use of the fund, established under the pretext of environmental protection, for the construction of the pipeline is outrageous from the point of view of both ecology and geopolitics. The politician also accused the Russian government of seeking to use the energy project to cut off gas transit through Ukraine and Poland. “The fund in support of the gas pipeline should be closed,” she said.
Earlier it was reported that the parliament of the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern decided to create a fund in defense of the Nord Stream-2 project. According to the Prime Minister of the state Manuela Schwesig, first of all, the fund will have to promote projects that contribute to the protection of the environment and climate. However, it will also have the opportunity to participate in the completion of the pipeline.
The pipeline from Russia to Germany was supposed to be completed at the end of 2019, but U.S. sanctions prevented it from doing so. Due to the restrictions, the Swiss company Allseas, which provided the pipelayer, withdrew from the project. Russia had to look for another ship, and the completion date of the project was postponed indefinitely.
