At least 45 people were killed in a stampede at the funeral ceremony for the late President of Tanzania, John Magufuli, local newspaper Citizen reported, citing police.

Farewell to the late president was held at Uhuru Stadium in Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam. On Sunday, March 21, on the second day of farewell, a huge number of mourning people tried to get into the stadium bypassing the established entrances. The stampede began, as a result, 45 people were killed, another 37 people were injured.
Magufuli died on March 17 at the age of 61 in a hospital in Dar es Salaam. The vice president said the cause of his death was a heart attack. At the same time, the opposition and Western media claimed that Magufuli was seriously ill with coronavirus. The authorities denied this.
Earlier, Magufuli said there was no coronavirus in the country. He also encouraged residents to pray for three days to combat respiratory illnesses and stressed that he would not impose a lockdown. The Ministry of Health reported that Tanzania has no plans to purchase vaccines for COVID-19.
