According to the diplomat, this could further worsen relations between Moscow and Washington
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Bigan warned that Russia’s military intervention in Belarus would have a “very negative” impact on Moscow’s relations with the United States and European countries.
Bigan told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that while the U.S. does not see the events in Belarus as a geopolitical competition, the deployment of Russian forces in Belarus “will have significant consequences for relations between Russia and the United States, Russia and Europe.”
“The last four years have been very difficult for U.S.-Russian relations, but it’s possible that they could get worse,” Bigan said.
“One of the things that can limit the ability of any president, regardless of the results of the U.S. presidential election in November, to develop cooperation with Russia in any sphere is direct Russian interference in Belarus,” he added.
