U.S. President Joe Biden for the first time publicly called on Russian authorities to immediately release Alexei Navalny.
“Navalny’s politically motivated imprisonment and Russia’s attempts to suppress freedom of assembly is an issue of deep concern to us and the entire global community,” Biden said while delivering a foreign policy keynote address at the State Department.
“Navalny was targeted for exposing corruption. He should be released immediately and without conditions,” Biden added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously advised foreign politicians commenting on the Navalny situation to respect international law and deal with the problems of their own countries, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noting that statements by Western politicians on this topic are “just like copies.” In turn, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin has no intention of listening to statements about Navalny from abroad. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the behavior of Western diplomats and Western foreign ministries in the Navalny trial a chain of political staged actions.
