Secretary of State gave an interview to CNN, in which he also touched on the topic of US-China relations
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Sunday that the builders of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline must decide for themselves whether to complete the project, despite its opposition from Washington.
During an interview with CNN, the Secretary of State was asked if the US government could do something to stop the construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
“Ultimately it depends on whoever is trying to build the pipeline and complete it,” Blinken replied. “We just want to make sure that there is a clear understanding of our position, our rejection of this pipeline.”
The Secretary of State recalled that President Joe Biden called the pipeline a bad deal.
“It (the pipeline) undermines European energy security … the very principles of the need to diversify energy sources that the Europeans have agreed to. It is potentially harmful to Ukraine, Poland, and other countries. He rather empowers Russia with weapons, allowing energy to be used as a tool of coercion, ”Blinken said.
The secretary of state also touched on the topic of China in an interview, saying that he sees more and more aspects of confrontation in relations between the United States and Beijing.
“In these relations, there are more and more aspects of confrontation, this is certainly a competitive relationship,” Blinken said, noting that there are areas of cooperation between the two countries.
“But the common denominator is to approach China from a position of strength, whether it’s about confrontation, competition, or cooperation,” he added.
