The Democrat Party, and their chosen candidate to take on President Donald Trump in 2020, former Vice President Joe Biden, just got some bad news.
Biden has been the chosen challenger for Trump ever since he announced he would vie for the nomination, much in the same way Hillary Clinton was chosen by the Party in 2016.
But what Biden is facing is what top Republican contenders faced during the 2016 primaries. A challenger they dismissed in the beginning.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democrat Socialist, has surged ahead in the Iowa polls, according to a new poll done by The Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom.
This could spell disaster for both Biden and the Democrats in general as Sanders’s brand of socialism would likely not play well with the American voters.
But when the people make a decision about whoa and what they want there is not a ton that anyone can do about it.
Joe Lockhart, who worked for former President Bill Clinton as press secretary but who now serves as a CNN commentator, appeared on the CNN show “S.E. Cupp Unfiltered” on Saturday and gave Democrats the bad news.
“There are real shades of 2016,” he said. “I’m gonna get flamed on Twitter tonight for the next thing I’m going to say, but the media early on did not take Donald Trump seriously. So they didn’t vet him and say, does your plan add up? And you know what about your plan on Iran and getting out?”
“Up until now, the media has not taken Bernie Sanders that seriously,” he said.
“He would say the same thing,” the host said.
“And he’s been right,” Lockhart responded.
He said that Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren faces constant scrutiny over her Medicare For All plan, a plan mainly devised by Sanders, but that Sanders does not get hammered on it because the media does not take his candidacy seriously.
“Someone told me yesterday, just like Trump, Sanders has a hard floor of supporters,” he said. “It does not matter what he does or says. But he has a limited ceiling of supporters also.”
What is also worrisome for Biden is that Sanders’ support among black voters is also increasing.
“Even the latest poll yesterday on African-Americans showed [Sanders] was at 20%. Which is way higher than last time,” Lockhart said.
Brendan Buck, who worked as an aide to former House Speakers Paul Ryan and John Boehner, said that other Democrat candidates are frightened of challenging Sanders because of his hardcore base.
“All of the other Democrats are afraid to go after Bernie Sanders, largely because they know his voters are so important,” he said. “We saw it in 2016, they did not transfer to Hillary Clinton very well. So, I think everyone wants it to be somebody else’s problem to take out Bernie Sanders but nobody is really willing to throw the punch.”
But some people think that the person who is really gunning to take out Sanders is Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi who, some belief, chose this time to send the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate because the trial would take Sanders off the campaign trail right before voting.
It would also take Sen. Warren off the trail, both of which benefit the chosen candidate, Biden. Democrats have done their best to rig primaries before and there is no reason to believe they are about to stop.
