Lisa Monaco nominated for the post of Deputy Prosecutor General, Vanita Gupta for the post of Assistant Prosecutor General
Nominated by President Joe Biden for two key Justice Department positions on Tuesday, they are speaking at hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Former prosecutor Lisa Monaco, who served as National Security and Counterterrorism Advisor during Barack Obama’s presidency, has been nominated for the position of Deputy Attorney General, who is in charge of criminal cases and national security issues.
Vanita Gupta has been nominated for the post of Assistant Attorney General, who oversees the Civil Affairs and Civil Rights Divisions, as well as antitrust, environmental, grant and public order issues.
Both candidates enjoy bipartisan support, although Gupta’s nomination has drawn some criticism from conservatives for her progressive views on criminal justice reform.
The committee previously approved the candidacy of Attorney General Merrick Garland by 15 votes to 7. The Senate is expected to approve him for the post on Wednesday.
If approved for the post, Monaco will help control a large-scale investigation into the storming of the Capitol by a crowd of supporters of former President Donald Trump.
