China launches missiles into disputed South China Sea

The launch came a day after Beijing protested the flight of a U.S. reconnaissance plane

Tensions between the U.S. and China in the South China Sea have escalated after Beijing fired four missiles into the disputed waters.

The launch of four medium-range ballistic missiles into the South China Sea occurred on Wednesday amid a broader military exercise by the People’s Liberation Army of China, said a U.S. Defense Ministry spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous.

The missiles landed in the sea between Hainan Island and the Paracel Islands, the official said.
