Amid a sharp jump in the number of COVID-19 coronavirus infections in China, scientists are warning that two-thirds of the world’s population may be affected by the infection.
Coronavirus continues to frighten the whole world. The WHO speaks about the threat of mass infection and Ukrainian MPs, on the contrary, do not take the disease seriously. And who to believe?
Ira Longini, the consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), head of the Center for Infectious Disease Statistics and Quantitative Research at the University of Florida, said two-thirds of the population is likely to be affected by coronavirus Planet.
According to a scientist who tracks the spread of coronavirus in China, the number of carriers of infection can reach several billion. At the moment, the number of infected in China alone is approaching 64,000 people.
According to data for February 13, 121 people died in the Chinese province of Hubei in 24 hours. At the same time, 5,090 new infections were reported, bringing the total to 51,986.
Whether the coronavirus epidemic reaches global proportions will depend on the effectiveness of the strict quarantine under which China today is, among other things, multimillion-dollar cities, such as Wuhan, which has become a hotbed of infection.
WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China’s efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus, saying they give the rest of the world time to prepare for infection, Bloomberg reported.
For her part, Ira Longini warns that quarantine can only slow the spread of the virus, but not defeat it. “Isolation of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus and quarantine of people with whom they communicated will not be able to stop the spread”, – the expert emphasizes.
Other international experts in virology are in solidarity with Ira Longini. Gabriel Loing, a professor of public health at the University of Hong Kong, has already said that if the spread of coronavirus is not stopped, it could become infected with about two-thirds of the world’s population. At the same time, Neil Ferguson, a researcher at Imperial College London, suggested that the number of people infected with coronavirus in China could reach 50,000 a day.
Don’t you worry about Ukraine?
Olga Vasilevskaya-Smaglyuk, a member of parliament from the People’s Servant, said in a commentator to BBC News Ukraine that the coronavirus is a marketing move. According to her, some of the deputies of the Servant of the People hold such an opinion.
“I think that the coronavirus really exists. The fact that such viruses mutate and enrich entrepreneurs involved in the pharmaceutical industry is also true, just about this side no one wants to talk about it. I am not saying that this is a marketing move, I say that this is one of the versions,” the MP adjusted her opinion.
“The mortality is comparable to that of regular influenza,” she added.
Olga Vasilevskaya-Smaglyuk explained that the Rada discusses two versions – both a version of the global threat, and a version of the pharmaceutical industry’s earnings on coronavirus.
“These two versions really exist in the Ukrainian parliament. Representatives of the medical committee in private conversations talk about it en masse: today we buy masks en masse, yesterday we bought Temiflu en masse. This is the marketing of the sale of medicines and medical products. Coronavirus, it would be there, but we don’t have it, and I hope it won’t. But it’s cool to be slacker companies selling medical equipment,” the MP said.
