Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla called hypocritical and cynical the U.S. authorities’ decision to put the country back on the list of sponsors of terrorism and accused them of political opportunism.
“We condemn the hypocritical and cynical qualification of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism that the U.S. has declared. The political opportunism of this action is recognized by all who are genuinely concerned about the scourge of terrorism and its victims,” the politician wrote on his Twitter blog.
Earlier, the U.S. State Department had listed Cuba as a sponsor of terrorism “for repeatedly supporting acts of international terrorism and harboring terrorists.” According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, “the Cuban regime must end its support for terrorism and the subversion of American justice.”
President Donald Trump’s administration reversed the course begun by Democrat Barack Obama’s previous administration to improve relations with Cuba: sanctions were reimposed and engagement was halted.
