If the US authorities introduced social distance two weeks earlier, it would save many lives, scientists say.
The early introduction of quarantine in the United States could prevent about 54 thousand deaths from coronavirus. This is evidenced by a study by scientists from Columbia University, published on medRxiv on Thursday, May 21.
Since mid-March, the United States began to take measures to control the spread of COVID-19, but their effectiveness was less pronounced than in other countries.
Researchers have created a model that illustrates how the reduction in human contacts that began in mid-March slowed the transmission of the virus. Scientists also showed how the situation could have developed if such measures had been taken by the authorities one or two weeks earlier, and estimated the degree of infection and the number of deaths before May 3. The data was taken from several major cities, including New York and Los Angeles.
“Modeling shows that if the same control measures were implemented earlier only by 1-2 weeks, then a significant number of cases of infection and death could be prevented,” the worker said.
According to the simulation results, measures taken a week earlier could reduce the number of people infected in the United States by almost 704 thousand people (61.6%) and deaths by almost 36 thousand (55%). And if social distance measures had been introduced two weeks earlier, then probably about 960 thousand cases of COVID-19 infection (84%) and almost 54 thousand dead (82.7%) could have been avoided.
“Such a sharp reduction in morbidity and mortality due to the timely application of control measures underlines the urgent need for a decisive and quick response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the scientists concluded.
Recall that earlier Trump explained the high incidence of coronavirus in the United States. US President Donald Trump connects the high incidence rate in the country with a high level of testing.
It was also reported that the US appreciated the sum of “reparations” from China due to the pandemic. US authorities believe that China should contribute trillions of dollars in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
