Jeff Bezos has once again topped the list of the richest people in the world. What factors influence a place in the ranking and what advantages it gives, Mikhail Belyaev, candidate of economic sciences, explained in an interview with Radio Sputnik.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has once again topped the list of the richest people in the world, Bloomberg Billionaires Index (BBI) data show. The head of SpaceX and Tesla Elon Musk, who was in this position for more than a month, was on the second line. According to Bloomberg’s ranking, Jeff Bezos’s fortune is $191 billion and Elon musks are $190 billion.
The place in the ranking reflects not so much the wealth of Jeff Bezos himself, as the position of his company in the market, commented in an interview with Radio Sputnik this rotation expert of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, candidate of economic sciences Mikhail Belyaev.
“This is a reflection of his company in securities and stock quotes. This is a reflection of the capitalization of his business, which depends on current quotes on the stock exchange and securities, they are constantly in a certain fluctuation, now cheaper, now more expensive. This is a purely opportunistic surge when Bezos’s stock relatively went up in price as a result of some news reports that tend to affect the stock price,” he believes.
On the other hand, Jeff Bezos’ position in the billionaire rankings also affects the attractiveness of his company’s securities, the journalist continued
“This is an important reputational point: buying his company’s securities becomes more attractive for buying and selling, positioning in the market. Shareholders, even small ones, can at any time fix profits by selling their shares at a higher price. Naturally, Bezos himself has a considerable block of shares in his hands – in this part, he has indeed become richer personally, at the expense of this block. Naturally, the profit of the company increases, which means that at the end of the year, according to the results of profit calculation and dividend distribution, he will also make additional profit,” he said.
It is important that now it is technology companies that are competing for the first place in the ranking, the economist said.
“This indicates the importance, priority, and prospects of the companies that are at the cutting edge of technological progress. This is what is most important. The stock exchange, stock quotes are important economic indicators. This constant growth of the stock quotes of high-tech companies indicates where the economic success of both the corporation and the country is, if it pursues the goals of economic development on the scientific and technological basis,” believes Mikhail Belyaev.
He explained in which case a Russian could claim a place in the ranking of the richest people in the world.
“This place is very difficult to take because we are talking about a colossal capitalization, which is measured in the amount of about a trillion dollars. But it is possible that if we have some businessman who “rides the wave of scientific and technological progress and understands what is the main direction in the world, then he will be able to compete with Musk and Bezos. So far all our companies are developing mainly in the traditional areas, and they have certain limitations and do not give an opportunity for a breakthrough,” the economist believes.
