Epic Games Unveils Unreal Engine 5

In anticipation of the release of the Sony PlayStation 5 console, the developers showed what they are working on now. This is the new Unreal Engine 5 game engine. They showed only a technological demo for the PlayStation 5 platform. And there is something to rejoice about and something to be upset about.

The good news, first of all, is that the release dates for the engine have already been announced. The not very good news was that the new engine will be released after the release of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. It is tentatively said that the preview will be released in early 2021 and the version for game studios by the end of 2021.

If for a while you forget about it and just watch the video “Lumen in the Land of Nanite”, the mood of gamers can rise. In particular, it can be used to evaluate in detail how realistic game universes can be. And here we must pay tribute to the developers – they tried their best.

At the heart of Unreal Engine, 5 are two technologies Nanite and Lumen. The first of them is responsible for the high-quality virtualization of game geometry based on micropolygons. As a result, high-quality objects that are indistinguishable from blockbusters in Hollywood masterpieces can be introduced in the levels. This greatly facilitates the task of developers. Objects can simply be added from specialized applications.

Using Lumen solves another problem. Through it, the ability to control dynamic global lighting appears. Developers will be able to do this by prescribing the time of day and the position of the sun in the sky. As a result, objects will be rendered in more detail and with less time spent by developers.
