Every European should realize that the second wave of coronavirus is possible, the representative of the European Commission noted.
EU member states should prepare for the possible start of the second wave of the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. This was stated at a briefing by the representative of the European Commission on Health and Food Security Stefan de Keyersmaker, according to Ukrinform on Monday, May 11. According to him, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is now working on an analysis of the situation taking into account a possible second wave of COVID -19 and on measures to be taken in this regard.
“Based on the latest risk assessments made by the ECDC, member countries should prepare for a possible second wave of infection and use every opportunity to strengthen the existing surveillance system,” said Stefan de Keersmaker.
He stressed that all EU citizens should understand: a new wave is possible, even if the initial infection is successfully overcome.
Stefan de Keersmaker noted that weekly ministers of health of the EU countries communicate with profile European Commissioner Stella Kyriakides via video-conference and coordinate efforts to combat the pandemic, including the exchange of information on the availability of personal protective equipment and medical devices to help patients. This information, as well as the condition and congestion of existing medical facilities, are evaluated, according to him, in terms of readiness for a possible second wave of coronavirus.
Recall that during the day of May 10, almost 80 thousand cases of coronavirus were detected in the world, 3,510 people died. In total, there are about 4.2 million infected people in the world, more than 283 thousand victims, and almost 1.5 million have recovered.
