To change the situation in Belarus, international pressure on Alexander Lukashenko is needed. This was announced today, September 8, by the ex-presidential candidate of the republic Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
“We need international pressure on this regime, on this one person who is clinging to power. We need sanctions against persons who issue and carry out criminal orders that violate international norms and human rights, ”she said in her address to PACE.
According to her, due to the falsification of the election results, Alexander Lukashenko no longer enjoys legitimacy as president.
“He no longer represents Belarus. The forces and countries that conclude agreements with Lukashenka do so at their own peril and risk, ”Tikhanovskaya stressed and added that“ the Belarusian people and democratically elected government will not abide by the agreements that Lukashenka will conclude. ”
Let us remind you that Alexander Lukashenko officially won the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9. After that, protests began in the country. Lukashenko’s main rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya left for Lithuania, and her supporters created a Coordinating Council with the aim of transiting power in the country by holding new elections. The Belarusian authorities consider this body unconstitutional.
