Foreign nationals detained in Istanbul - alleged ISIS fighters

Today, March 24, in Istanbul, arrests were made of suspects in connection with the terrorist group Daesh “Islamic State”, IS, ISIS. According to the Yeni Şafak newspaper, citing sources in the security services, eighteen people were detained, including 16 foreign citizens.

Police units launched simultaneous raids on fifteen addresses in 10 districts of the largest Turkish metropolis. According to intelligence agencies, the alleged ISIS fighters arrived from Iraq and Syria and were preparing for terrorist attacks in Turkey.

In 2013, Turkey became one of the first countries to declare ISIS a terrorist organization. Since then, the country has been repeatedly attacked by militants of this group, more than 300 people have been killed and hundreds injured in at least 10 suicide bombings, seven explosions of improvised explosive devices, and four-armed attacks, the newspaper notes.
