Friedrich Merz, the candidate for the presidency of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said that he highly evaluates his chances of becoming the successor of current German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He said this on the air of the TV channel N24.
He noted that in recent times he had stable support from the party and the population of Germany.
According to him, at the moment there are three candidates in total, each of them has its supporters in the CDU associations, in the lands and districts. Mertz recalled that the final decision will be made by delegates.
The Bundestag elections in Germany are scheduled for September 2021. Merkel is not planning to take part in them. She will be able to address the Germans with a New Year address next year if the new chancellor does not take office in time.
