German General Secretary of the European External Action Service Helga Maria Schmid will become the new Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Presse newspaper reported citing diplomatic sources.
According to the newspaper, representatives of the OSCE member states were able to reach an agreement on the candidates proposed by Albania as OSCE chairman in the office at a closed meeting on Tuesday night.
A formal decision will be made at the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OSCE, which will be held for the 27th time from December 3 to 4, but for the first time will be held in virtual mode due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to Schmid, former Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu has claimed the post of OSCE Secretary-General.
The 57 OSCE participating States will also have to approve candidates for the post of High Commissioner on National Minorities, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and the Head of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights at the virtual SMID.
