The Iranian Supreme Court sentenced to death the head of the news portal Amad News Ruholla Zam, who is suspected of collaborating with foreign intelligence and anti-government activities. On Tuesday, June 30, said the official representative of the Supreme Court of Iran, Golyam Hossein Ismaily, reports Tasnim.
“He was sentenced to death,” Ismaily said.
However, he added that the decision is not final, which means it can be appealed.
In October last year, Iranian media reported that Zam was detained by forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC – the elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces). He is accused of anti-government activities and collaboration with intelligence agencies in France, the United States, and Israel. Later, Iranian media published a video that captures the head of the Amad News portal after the arrest.
The deputy is known as an Iranian journalist and activist, leading his activities from foreign countries. France was considered his place of permanent residence. He was especially active in covering protests in Iran in 2017-2018.
