Helicopter with Ukrainians shot down in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, a Mi-8 helicopter belonging to a Moldovan airline was shot down by a missile. The Afghan military and crew members, citizens of Ukraine – were wounded. This was announced on Saturday, January 25, Interfax-Ukraine reports, citing Irina Bodolike, a spokeswoman for the Civil Aviation Authority of Moldova.

The incident took place today in the Afghan province of Helmand. The helicopter was carrying Afghan troops and was shot down by Taliban militants. He landed in a state of emergency. The crew and passengers were picked up by another Moldovan helicopter, which was flying in the wake.

According to preliminary data, four Afghan servicemen and two crew members – citizens of Ukraine – were wounded.

In turn, the Ministry of Defence of Afghanistan confirmed the incident with the helicopter, specifying its model as Mi-17.

Today at 12:00 in Kajaki county of Helmand province, a Mi-17 military helicopter made an emergency landing, none of the passengers of the helicopter was injured. The Ministry of Defence is investigating the circumstances of the incident,” the military said in an official statement. Earlier on Saturday, a U.S. military helicopter MH-60 landed in the south of Japan. All five members of the helicopter crew were rescued by the Japanese watchdog.
