How to overcome bad breath: a scientific approach

The cause of this problem in 8% of cases are infectious diseases of the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs, in a very small percentage of cases due to digestive disorders and some liver diseases. The main cause of persistent halitosis is the volatile sulfur compounds, which are most often formed as a result of the life activities of a number of bacteria causing gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as the presence of bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds in the back of the tongue. There are certain foods such as garlic, onions, broccoli, legumes, orange juice, carbonated soft drinks, and alcohol, which can be a source of bad breath. They cause so-called temporary halitosis.

The unpleasant smell, in this case, occurs due to the fact that as a result of digestion of these products are formed volatile sulfur compounds, which, getting into the bloodstream through the mucous membrane of the stomach, then appear in the lungs and saliva, and thus are removed from the body. In this evacuation of volatile sulfur compounds, bad breath can persist for 72 hours.

Tips to help avoid bad breath:

– Replace your old toothbrush with a new one more often, as the bacteria on the old toothbrush, which cause unpleasant odors, may feel quite comfortable. Take regular and careful care of your mouth by flossing and using mouthwash fluid. When brushing your teeth, remember to massage with a brush and tongue, it is a real breeding ground for bacteria. Do not smoke. Tobacco slows down the process of saliva formation and causes dry mouth. And this provokes the creation of an excellent breeding ground for the bacteria, which causes an unpleasant odor.

– Avoid excessive consumption of garlic, onions, spices, and coffee. Conversely, eat more apples, carrots, peas, watermelon, kiwi, and celery.

– The addition of spicy herbs such as parsley, rosemary, basil, mint, and eucalyptus leaves helps neutralize the effects of dishes cooked with lots of garlic or onions as sources of bad breath. At the same time, you should avoid eating a lemon.

– To get a fresh breath, drink yogurt (and other fermented milk products): they reduce the amount of hydrogen sulfide in the mouth; eat cheese (especially cheddar) – their fats reduce the acidity of food and restore pH-balance; eat cut into small pieces of ginger, which has the ability to neutralize odors generated in the mouth.

– Drink plenty of water. This is extremely important because bad breath is often associated with dry mouth.
