The Indian Navy will join the joint exercises of Russia and Iran in the northern part of the Indian Ocean, which started the day before. This was announced today, February 16, by the Commander of the Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, the state news agency IRNA reported.
Announcing the South Asian giant’s upcoming connection to the training maneuvers codenamed “Maritime Security Belt,” the Iranian naval commander stressed that the overall goal of the exercise is to achieve collective security in the region.
“Since last year, a series of joint naval security exercises involving regional and world powers have been held. This time, the Russian fleet has already arrived on the ground to participate in the exercise, and the Indian fleet will join the combined maritime security exercises,” the admiral noted.
Earlier on Tuesday, two submarines of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Armed Forces welcomed the ships of the Russian Navy, which arrived in Iranian waters to participate in joint exercises in the southeast of the Islamic Republic. The IRGC and Iranian Armed Forces submarines met the Russian Navy unit consisting of corvette “Stoykiy” and logistic ship “Kola” (auxiliary ship, a medium-sized marine tanker in the Russian Navy – Ed.), which had entered the territorial waters of Iran.
The press service of the Iranian Army announced one day earlier, on February 15, that the Islamic Republic and the Russian Federation had launched joint naval exercises in the Indian Ocean. Rear-Admiral of the Iranian Navy Gholamreza Takhani informed that the training maneuvers will be conducted under the slogan “Collective cooperation at sea for maritime trade security” and will cover an area of 17,000 square kilometers. “The exercises will practice the interaction between the navies of the two countries in rescuing a floating vessel from fire, freeing the crew of a vessel attacked by terrorists, firing at sea and air targets, and other tactical and operational actions,” Rear Admiral Tahani listed.
The joint naval exercises of Russia and Iran send a “clear signal” to the enemies of the Islamic Republic and demonstrate the power of its armed forces, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, deputy coordinator of the Iranian Army, said, as EADaily reported, February 14. “When the powerful Russian navy conducts exercises with the naval forces of the Army of the Islamic Republic and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, it is a clear signal,” the Iranian military commander noted. – The Iranian Navy is at the level of world naval powers in terms of equipment, manpower, technology and tactics, command and control, communications, and capacity for their modernization.
