Ingenuity mini-helicopter lowered to the surface of Mars

It was docked on NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on a neighboring planet in February.

NASA’s rover has lowered the Ingenuity mini-helicopter to the surface of the Red Planet in preparation for its maiden flight, the US space agency tweeted.

The ultra-light aircraft was docked under the bottom of the Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars on February 18.

The photo illustrating the tweet shows that the rover rode away from the helicopter and its “airfield” after it was unloaded to the surface.

Previously, the helicopter was powered by the rover’s power grid, but now it will have to rely on its own battery to operate the heater needed to protect electrical components from freezing and cracking during cold Martian nights.
