The Voronezh and Vladivostok multi-purpose nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project, which began construction in July this year at the Sevmash shipyard, will be the first to adopt new Kalibr-M cruise missiles with a range of more than 4,000 km.
The new “Calibers” can be equipped with either nuclear warheads or high-explosive shrapnel. Thus, the new submarines will be better prepared for the tasks of non-nuclear strategic deterrence in comparison with the military equipment that preceded them
The source said.
The Vladivostok and Voronezh submarines will be launched from the strikes in 2024 and 2025 respectively. In accordance with the development programs of the Russian Navy, they will join the fleet in 2027. The agreement for the construction of two multi-purpose nuclear submarines was signed last summer during the International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2019”. The main nuclear submarine cruiser of the Severodvinsk project 885 joined the Northern Fleet six years ago. The Kazan submarine, which was built on the upgraded 885M Yasen-M project, is scheduled to be handed over to the fleet by the end of this year.
Currently, the main armament of the submarines of Project 885 and 885M is the Onix and Kalibr-PL cruise missiles. In the near future, such weapons will be Circon missiles.
