Jean Kennedy Smith Dies at 92; Sister of Famed Clan Helped Forge Peace in Northern Ireland

The younger sister of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy – Gene Kennedy Smith – died at the age of 92. This was announced on Thursday by The New York Times, citing her daughter Kim.
According to the publication, Kennedy Smith died on June 17 at her home in New York’s Manhattan area. Thus, none of the nine children of Joseph and Rosa Kennedy survived.
Gene Kennedy Smith was born on February 20, 1928. From 1993 to 1998, she served as US Ambassador to Ireland. She played an important role in the Northern Ireland peace process, contributing to the signing of the Belfast Agreement on April 10, 1998, for a political settlement of the conflict in the region, The New York Times notes.
