Johnson’s high-profile statement about the pandemic caused an international scandal. China reacted harshly to words about the source of COVID-19.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, at a meeting of world leaders, where the agenda was the protection of nature, declared the insanity of traditional Chinese medicine. In particular, he criticized the use of pangolin scales for male potency problems. The politician believes that the pandemic happened because of an imbalance between man and nature.
“The virus came from bats or pangolins — because of the silly idea that the crushed scales of this animal will somehow give you strength or something,” Johnson pronounced.
This high-profile statement caused an international uproar. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian reacted harshly to the British premier’s words. He suggested that discussions on the origin of the coronavirus should be left to scientists and that politicians should not get involved at all.
“This issue has no place for people who speculate on this topic and make a fuss. This only undermines international cooperation,” the diplomat told Bloomberg.
The West has already repeatedly made accusations against China, stating the impotence of this country in restraining the spread of the infection, as well as in concealing data and late response to the outbreak of COVID-19. In particular, U.S. President Donald Trump’s deputy advisor Matthew Pottinger considered the virus leak from the Wuhan laboratory “the most credible theory” of the pandemic. The Chinese Foreign Ministry accused Pottinger of spreading “low-quality lies and rumors.
