Josep Bartomeu was temporarily released from custody

The former president of the Spanish “Barcelona” Josep Bartomeu, arrested on Monday as part of an investigation into corruption at the soccer club, was temporarily released from custody by the court, reports Marca.

Earlier, the Spanish media reported that police searched the office of Barcelona on Monday. According to press reports, Bartomeu, former Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau, lawyer Roman Gomez Ponti and Bartomeu’s former head of administration Jaume Masferrer were arrested. According to the investigation, Bartomeu made deals on behalf of the club for personal profit. In 2020, the functionary hired specialists to assess the reputation of the president and other club executives and to defame a number of current and former players through social media. The company’s actions led to the departure of a number of executives due to serious allegations against them.
Bartomeu stepped down as president of Barcelona in October 2020. Elections for a new president will be held on March 7, with the candidates being João Laporta, Antoni Freixa and Victor Font.
