Merkel no longer considers the United States to be the “automatic defender” of Europe

Europeans need to do more to ensure their own security, the German Chancellor believes.
The United States will no longer automatically defend Europe, and it needs to do more to ensure its own security. This was stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the debate in the Bundestag on the federal budget for 2020, TASS reported on Wednesday, September 11.
“Europe is bound by values with this superpower, despite all the differences of opinion. There is much in common, but there is no more automaticity in the fact that they, as during the Cold War, will play the role of protector of Europe, – said Merkel: “Here we need a more significant contribution of Europe.”

The Chancellor stressed that this debate on the Budget is “taking place at a time of serious change and shifting forces in the world.”

Recall, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from NATO if European governments, especially Germany, do not increase defense spending.
