NATO marks highest activity of Russian submarines since Cold War

In 2019, the level of activity of Russian submarines was the highest since the Cold War, the North Atlantic Alliance acknowledges.

The North Atlantic Alliance believes that Russia is increasing the activity of submarines, said NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu, Interfax-Ukraine writes on Monday, December 16.

“Russia is steadily increasing its activity under the water,” Lungescu said.

This year, the level of activity of Russian submarines was the highest since the Cold War.

According to Lungescu, NATO will respond by increasing patrols, particularly in Norwegian territorial waters and the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic, Lungescu said, remains vital to Europe’s security.

NATO is also increasing its presence in the Black Sea. On December 15, it became known that the U.S. missile destroyer entered the Black Sea.

Also recently, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO is stepping up its presence in the Black Sea.
