NATO Secretary General urges Belarus to respect human rights

Jens Stoltenberg says the alliance is not increasing its military forces in the region, so this cannot be an excuse for repression in Belarus

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday called on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to respect fundamental human rights, saying that there is no reason to use the military alliance as a pretext for repression.

“The regime in Minsk must demonstrate full respect for fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest,” said Stoltenberg, who is in Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“NATO is not increasing its military forces in the region, so any attempt to use this as a pretext for repression against peaceful demonstrators is absolutely unjustified,” he said, noting that the people of Belarus should determine their own future.
