“Not only the economy”: the EU is studying the friendship between Russia and China

EU Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell

Borrell announced rapprochement between Russia and China amid confrontation with the West
EU Foreign Policy Representative Josep Borrell announced a conspiracy between Russia and China against Western countries. In his opinion, the rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing is based not only on the economy but also on the rejection of democratic values. He also added that the confrontation between the United States and China is unlikely to develop into a new “cold war.” Russia and China are uniting to act against Western countries, said the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell. His letter was published on the website of the European External Action Service.

“It would be wrong to analyze their relationship only from an economic point of view. The Chinese-Russian rapprochement is based primarily on the rejection of democratic values and opposition to what they consider to be interference in their internal affairs, ”the head of European diplomacy said.

He also suggested that the multipolarity of the world will avoid a new “cold war” between America and China. In addition, he considered it necessary to conduct a thorough analysis of the interaction between Russia and the PRC in order to understand the motives of these states.

On March 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that it was Europe that destroyed all mechanisms of interaction with Russia.

“We still have partners, only individual European countries that want to be guided by their national interests, probably objectively this leads to the fact that our relations with China are developing faster than what is left of relations with European countries,” Lavrov said on meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang I. The Russian Foreign Minister also stressed that the Russian Federation would be ready to restore relations with the European Union as an organization if Brussels “deems it expedient to eliminate this anomaly in contacts with Russia.”

Lavrov added that equality and the search for a balance of interests should become the basis for restoring relations with the EU.

On February 15, Lavrov already stated that the breakdown of Russian-European contacts has been going on for a long time, the initiator of this is the EU. According to him, “any person who is more or less interested in the situation in Europe” understands that this process of rupture began in 2014 when a coup d’etat took place in Ukraine.

The minister expressed the opinion that it was then that the EU was unable to fulfill the agreements that were reached right on the eve of those events and under which the representatives of Germany, France, and Poland put their signatures.

After the end of Lavrov’s visit to the PRC, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the Russian Federation did not want to break off relations with the European Union. At the same time, she noted that if tomorrow the EU announces the severance of relations with Moscow, the Russian side will “hear” and “accept” it. “Europe has stepped on the same rake many times in history, acting contrary to its own interests, simply because it was pushed there,” she said.

In early February 2021, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, came to Moscow. Subsequently, he said that the Russian authorities were not interested in normalizing relations with Europe, as indicated by the expulsion of EU diplomats right during his visit.

In an interview with the Chinese media, Lavrov previously described relations between Moscow and Beijing as “the best in history,” and friendship between the countries is “absolutely free from any ideological constraints.”

“It has an intrinsic character, is not subject to any opportunistic factors, and, at the same time, is not directed against any third country. The leaders of our countries have repeatedly stressed this, ”the Russian minister stressed.
