Evgeny Slyuta, Head of the Laboratory of Geochemistry of the Moon and Planets at the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, revealed a way to buy a piece of a natural satellite.
The scientist said that now it is impossible to buy lunar soil because it belongs to the states that brought it to Earth – Russia and the United States. At the auction, you can only buy lunar meteorites that fell on our planet, but it will be quite expensive because they are very rare. At the same time, he pointed out that 99 percent of the samples that are brought to the laboratory is not lunar meteorites.
Eugene Sluta called lunar soil sales announcements on the Internet fakes. People can believe them, because “the level of education in the last couple of decades has decreased,” the scientist explained. At the same time, if such a purchase is still possible, you should verify the authenticity of the purchase by contacting the laboratory. However, the scientists will take a small part of the meteorite into their collection for examination.
In 1970, the lunar soil was brought to Earth by the Soviet automatic interplanetary station “Luna-16”. It was the first delivery of soil from the moon by means of an automatic station. Before that soil was brought to Earth by American astronauts.
Earlier it was reported that scientists of the Hawaiian Institute of Geophysics and Planetology found on the Moon mysterious rust, which is usually observed on Earth. The researchers believe that it was formed as a result of iron oxidation with oxygen from the upper atmosphere of the Earth, which is blown by the same solar wind. When the moon is in the tail of the Earth’s magnetosphere, oxygen enters the satellite’s surface.
