U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed details of the conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He wrote about it in his Twitter account.
According to Pompeo, he and Lavrov discussed bilateral and global issues, in particular, arms control. He also expressed confidence that Russia and the United States will be able to work together, despite differences.
“Although we have areas of tension with Russia, we must find a constructive way forward. We’ve worked together before – we can do it again,” he said.
The meeting between Pompeo and Lavrov took place on September 27 within the framework of the UN General Assembly, the meeting lasted about 50 minutes. Diplomats discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula, Afghanistan, the Middle East, and North Africa region, as well as the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, Lavrov said that the U.S. attempts to pressure Russia through economic sanctions are futile.
