Pompeo called to account those responsible for the death of the Ukrainian airliner in Iran

Ukrainian UIA plane was shot down by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the skies over Iran exactly one year ago

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released a statement marking the anniversary of the tragedy that occurred in Iran exactly one year ago when members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) paramilitary group shot down a Ukrainian International Airlines flight with two surface-to-air missiles. As a result, 176 passengers and crew members were killed.

The United States, along with the governments of Ukraine, Canada, Britain, Sweden, and Afghanistan, honored the victims of that plane crash and called for justice to be done against those responsible for the tragedy, Pompeo said. According to an investigation by Iranian authorities, the plane was shot down by two surface-to-air missiles fired by IRGC air defense teams.

“Yet, a year later, IRGC members have still not been held accountable for the deaths of 176 innocent passengers and crew members who were onboard the plane. Instead, throughout the investigation, the regime continued to defend the perpetrators of the IRGC. We look forward to the day when the Iranian authorities begin to value the lives of their own people with the same zeal with which they now cover up the crimes of their officials,” Mike Pompeo said.
