Cuba was removed from the list in 2015 under President Obama
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hinted that he wants to put “evil” Cuba back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Such a move, taken at the end of his term, would increase pressure on the communist island.
In an interview published Tuesday, Pompeo confirmed that the State Department is exploring such a major decision before he leaves office on Jan. 20.
“We don’t preempt decisions on such matters, but the world knows about Cuba’s evil hand in many places,” Pompeo told Bloomberg Television.
“It’s entirely appropriate for us to consider whether Cuba is really sponsoring terrorism,” Pompeo said.
“And if it is, then like any other country that provides material support to terrorists, they should also be put in that category and treated according to their behavior,” he added.
