About 12 activists from Hong Kong are detained in China.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States is deeply concerned about the detention of Hong Kong activists in Guangdong Province, China. He also said that detainees were denied access to lawyers and local authorities had not provided information about their detention conditions or the charges against them.
The United States questions Hong Kong’s compliance with its stated commitments to protect citizens’ rights and calls on authorities to “ensure due process of law,” Pompeo said in a statement.
According to the U.S. Secretary of State, about 12 activists were arrested about two weeks ago off the coast of Hong Kong.
