Roskomnadzor has begun to install equipment on the networks of providers, which in case of threats will allow isolating the Russian segment of the Internet from the rest of the world. This was announced on Tuesday, September 24, TASS reports.
According to the head of Roskomnadzor, Aleksandr Zharov, testing of this equipment will begin at the end of September, which will be completed by November.
“We will first conduct technical checks, affect traffic, does not affect traffic, whether all services work successfully. And then we will test it in combat mode. As long as everything is going well when the experiment is over, I will talk about the results,” he said.
Recall that the law allowing to isolate Runet was passed in the spring of 2019. According to the document, the Russian authorities, represented by Roskomnadzor, will monitor all data points abroad and rout traffic, including with the help of special equipment from providers.
Before that, in April 2018, a court in Moscow decided to block the Telegram messenger for failing to comply with the REQUIREMENTS of the FSB to provide access to users’ correspondence. After that, Roskomnadzor began blocking the messenger in Russia. Because of this, millions of IP addresses that Telegram used to bypass the lock were blocked.
