The number of unaccompanied minors has more than quadrupled compared to March last year
US authorities in March detained more than 170,000 migrants at the US southwestern border, according to government documents obtained by the New York Times.
The newspaper noted that this is the highest figure for any month in at least the last 15 years. Compared to February, the number of detainees increased by 70 percent.
Thousands of children remain in special centers, and border guards are allowing an increasing number of migrant families to enter the United States.
More than 18,700 unaccompanied children and adolescents were taken into custody in March, including at points of entry, the New York Times reported.
That’s nearly double the roughly 9,450 minors detained in February, and more than four times the 4,635 minors who crossed the border unaccompanied by an adult last March, according to documents.
