But cells of other organs are regenerated extremely slowly. This led American biologists to create chimeras of humans and pigs in order to learn how to grow human muscles.
Why muscles? Scientists have taken on a difficult task. The fact is that it is difficult to obtain them by borrowing from a donor, and muscle transplantation after death is excluded. The work began with the creation of chimeras. So scientists call embryos formed by genes of different species. The study used human and porcine genes. Modified pig embryos were obtained using the latest CRISPR / Cas9 system.
The experiments continued until the technology was fully developed. Then, the researchers decided to create a human chimera. For this, differences were identified in the work of the human and pig genomes at the early stages of embryonic development. They managed to isolate and extract one of the most characteristic genes. Then, the chimeras were reared in pigs’ queens. Their research has shown that they are completely healthy. Their muscle cells were 99.2% human!
This research could be of tremendous importance for the development of the regenerative direction in medicine. Scientists say that in the future, animals can be used as incubators for growing human organs and muscles.
