Former world boxing champion in several weight categories Roy Jones Jr. told about his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the change of citizenship.
Jones received Russian citizenship in September 2015.
“When I met with Putin, I asked him if I could obtain Russian citizenship. He answered: “Of course. That’s great, who would have thought that a dark-skinned guy could become a citizen of Russia and the United States. People say that these countries are enemies, but they are not. Why do all Russians love and respect me? 95% of Russia’s population knows who I am and that I’m an American,” Jones told Daily Mail.
“In Russia, I feel like Michael Jackson or Michael Jordan. When people see me, they stop cars, children run up and try to look out the window. It is amazing,” added Jones.
Jones finished his career in 2018. The American, who has Russian citizenship, is a former absolute world champion. In total on his account 66 victories (47 KOs) and nine defeats.
