Russian scientists have developed unique ceramic materials, which are much stronger than steel. The new materials can be successfully used in military equipment. It is likely that in the coming years, Russian armored personnel carriers and tanks will have corundum ceramics instead of steel. They are capable of providing the best level of protection while significantly reducing their weight.
The authorship of the new development belongs to the Russian company “Technodynamics”, which is currently conducting field tests of ceramic armor. The final test cycle can last another 3 – 4 months. The head of the company singled out two main advantages – lightness and the ability to effectively protect against various artillery shells. For the first time, such armored plates started to be talked about after their demonstration in the framework of the “Army-2020” forum, which was held in international format.
The Russian gunsmiths do not reveal all the secrets of their new development but are ready to share some information about the material’s composition and properties. It is based on aluminum oxide, which is only part of the composite armor cover. Ceramics, on the other hand, is used as a “crushing layer” that takes on the maximum impact energy when hit by armor-piercing projectiles.
The role of ceramics is to deform the shape of the core of the projectile. This is achieved due to greater strength than steel. Then, the projectile encounters another defense that can stop it from being steel. It is also acceptable to make a second layer of a special polymer. Corundum ceramics has long and successfully been used in bulletproof vests. Thanks to the use of ceramic armor plates, the vest is able to withstand hit from a sniper rifle.
