Derek Scholle called on Minsk to immediately release political prisoners
The State Department adviser Derek Scholle discussed with the Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei the situation in that country and the current state of U.S.-Belarusian relations, as the U.S. Department of State informed.
“Counselor Scholle clearly stated the need for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Belarus, without exception, highlighting the urgency of the case of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty consultant Igor Losik,” said the State Department.
The adviser and foreign minister also discussed the upcoming exchange of ambassadors between the U.S. and Belarus, noting that open lines of communication are beneficial to both countries, the report said.
“The call underscored the strong support of the United States for proposals for a genuine dialogue with leaders of the protest movement to hold free and fair elections with international observers this year,” the report said.
