Senator suspected social network in violation of the sanctions regime
Republican Senator Ted Cruz called on the Department of Finance and the US Department of Justice to investigate whether Twitter is breaking the law by allowing Iran’s top officials to use their social network. Cruz demanded that the company investigate “for possible violation” of US sanctions against Iran.
Cruz said Twitter may have broken the law by allowing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammed Jawad Zarif to tweet despite being on the sanctions list. International sanctions imposed by the United States prohibit individuals and legal entities from providing persons on the list with any kind of assistance, goods and services.
Cruz said he first raised this question in February – before the current conflict between Twitter and President Trump began.
Twitter declined to comment on Senator Cruise’s actions.
