The European Union would not like the Ukrainian scenario to be repeated in Belarus, the French president explained.

The European Union is interested in a democratic transition period in Belarus, negotiations between the authorities and the opposition, and the organization of new elections. This was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday, August 20, TASS reports.

“Belarus needs a dialogue between the authorities, the opposition, and civil society. We want the Belarusians to be able to organize this dialogue themselves, but the European Union is ready to accompany this process if Belarus agrees to its mediation,” he said.

According to Macron, the European Union would not like the Ukrainian scenario to be repeated in Belarus.

As reported, the EU authorities may not approve finally sanctions against Belarusian officials because of the position of Greece and Cyprus.

The summit of EU leaders agreed on sanctions against Belarus, and also announced that it does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in the country.
