The EU statement emphasizes that this is another violation of international law
The European Union said that by starting a conscription campaign on the Crimean peninsula, Russia took a step that violates the norms of international law.
“Today, the Russian Federation has launched another conscription campaign in the illegally annexed Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol to recruit residents of the peninsula to serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” the EU said in a statement released on Thursday.
“This is another violation of international humanitarian law. The Russian Federation is bound by international law and is obliged to ensure the protection of human rights on the peninsula, ”the document emphasizes.
Meanwhile, the Crimean Human Rights Group reported that in March 12 new criminal cases were recorded against residents of Crimea under the article “Evasion of service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
According to the organization, since the beginning of the occupation, 201 criminal cases have been initiated under this article. A verdict has already been passed on 186 of them, 15 more are under consideration.
Earlier, the experts of the organization called the militarization of the civilian population of Crimea one of the main threats to human rights on the peninsula.
